Advantages of Using an Extra Monitor

Do I need and extra monitor?

Yes, I actually use 3, both photographers and videographers can greatly benefit from using an extra monitor, though the necessity depends on the specific nature of their work. Below are the key reasons why an additional monitor is often recommended, along with advantages for both fields.

1. Improved Workflow and Productivity

  • Dual-Screen Setup: With an extra monitor, you can dedicate one screen for editing while keeping your reference materials, emails, or other tools open on the second screen. This reduces the need to toggle between windows, making your workflow faster and more efficient.
  • Editing in Real-Time: A second monitor is especially useful when working with large files or video footage, as it allows you to preview edits on a larger, clearer screen.

2. More Screen Real Estate

  • Larger Viewing Area: An additional monitor provides more space to work with. For photographers, it can be used to display your editing software on one screen and the image you’re working on in full-screen mode on the other. Videographers can use it for a timeline, the video preview, and playback, all at once.
  • Better Colour Accuracy: Professional photographers and videographers often need colour accuracy when editing. An extra monitor allows you to use a high-quality reference monitor to ensure your images and videos are correctly colour-graded and match the final output.

3. Monitoring Video/Audio Feed in Real-Time

  • For Videographers: Extra monitors are essential for those working with video production. A secondary monitor can be used to display a live video feed or work in a multi-monitor setup with a timeline or other editing tools. It’s particularly important in live editing or when shooting with multiple cameras, as it gives you a better perspective of the footage.
  • For Colour Grading: High-end monitors are often used for colour grading to ensure accurate colours are displayed, especially for critical video work.

4. Multi-Application Use

  • For Photographers: An extra monitor allows for running multiple applications side-by-side. For instance, you can run Lightroom or Photoshop on one monitor while having another application open for reference images, client communications, or to view files from your camera.
  • For Videographers: Similarly, you can have video editing software on one screen and the final output preview on the second. This is especially helpful in non-linear editing workflows.

5. Enhanced Presentation Capabilities

  • Client Reviews: When working with clients, having an extra monitor makes it easy to share your work without them having to lean over your shoulder. This is especially helpful when showing high-resolution photos or video content that needs to be viewed in detail.

6. Dedicated Workstations

  • Separation of Tasks: Having an additional monitor allows you to separate editing from other tasks. For example, you can set up one screen for email management and reference material and the other solely for editing or grading your photos or video. This separation leads to better focus and fewer distractions.

What to Look for in an Extra Monitor

  1. Resolution: A 4K monitor is ideal for video work, providing the pixel density necessary to see fine details. For photo editing, a high-resolution monitor (1080p or better) is necessary to ensure sharpness and accuracy.
  2. Colour Accuracy: A monitor that covers a wide colour gamut (like AdobeRGB or DCI-P3) is important for photographers and videographers who need precise colour control during editing.
  3. Connectivity: Ensure the monitor has the necessary ports for your camera or computer (HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C). If you’re using a laptop or other portable devices, make sure your monitor is compatible with those connections.
  4. Size: Choose a monitor size that balances screen space and workspace. A 27-inch monitor is often ideal for both photo editing and video editing. For video production, you might want a larger screen to easily see the timeline and clips.
  5. Refresh Rate: For videographers, a higher refresh rate (e.g., 60Hz or more) is beneficial for smooth video playback and editing.

When an Extra Monitor is Not Essential

  • Casual Photography/Videography: If you primarily work on smaller projects or do not require advanced editing, a single monitor setup can be sufficient. However, as projects grow in complexity, an additional monitor often becomes necessary to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • On-the-Go Work: If you’re working with a laptop and primarily editing on location or while traveling, you may not have the space for an additional monitor. However, many modern laptops now come with high-resolution displays that can work well for basic editing.

Conclusion

While not absolutely essential, an extra monitor is a valuable tool for both photographers and videographers, especially for those working on complex projects or in professional environments. It enhances workflow, ensures accurate colour grading, and provides more space for multitasking, making it a worthwhile investment for those who need to maximise their efficiency and output quality.
