What is Dual Pixel Autofocus (DPAF)?
Dual Pixel Autofocus (DPAF) is an advanced phase-detection autofocus (PDAF) system built directly into the camera’s image sensor. Unlike traditional contrast-based autofocus, which can be slow and prone to hunting, DPAF enables fast and accurate focusing by using every pixel on the sensor to detect phase differences.
Each pixel is split into two photodiodes, allowing the camera to compare signals from both sides and achieve focus nearly instantly. This is particularly useful for live view and video shooting, where mirrorless and DSLR cameras with contrast-detect AF typically struggle.

- Some smartphones and mirrorless brands (like Samsung and Sony) use similar phase-detection AF but with different implementations.
- Nikon’s Z-series uses a hybrid phase-detection system, but it’s not Dual Pixel AF.
Final Thoughts
If you shoot a lot of video, live view stills, or action photography, a camera with Dual Pixel AF can significantly improve autofocus speed and accuracy. However, if you primarily shoot through the optical viewfinder with a DSLR like your Nikon D5, its dedicated phase-detect AF module will still be faster in high-speed environments.
